Italian-owned businesses lined the streets, selling everything from groceries to clothing. Italian restaurants and cafes became popular gathering places. Josephine’s family business was an integral part of this community for many decades.
Their story is one of many immigrant stories. From the struggles and challenges faced by the first wave of Italian immigrants in the late 19th century, to the vibrant community that emerged in the early 20th century.
While the demographics of the neighborhood have changed in recent years and now includes a thriving artist’s community and many young professionals, the Italian-American community has been a constant presence in the area for over a century. The Josephine honors this past and carries it into the 21st Century.
